POWER-GEN - One Day Seminar - 3rd March 2010 - Indian Habitat Centre, New Delhi, India

11.00 - 17.30

The government of India has ambitious plans to significantly raise the country’s power generation capacity from its current installed base of 145 GW. The current 11th Five-Year Plan typifies this aspiration, with the slogan ‘Power for All by 2012’ and a capacity target of 200 GW by 2012.

The key drivers fuelling India’s power generation initiatives include the population’s growing need for reliable and affordable electricity, increasing household incomes and an emergence of a middle class, and bold electrification plans for its vast rural areas.

Clearly, all this raises both strategic and technical issues and challenges for India’s power generation sector that need to be addressed urgently.

Conference on thermal technology from March 4

Source: http://www.expressbuzz.com
KOCHI: The international conference ADSET 2010 organised by the Institute of Technical Thermodynamics, Germany, Institute of Thermodynamics and Thermal Engineering, University of Stuttgart, and the Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology, Kochi, will be held on March 4 and 5. The highlights of the event will be a panel discussion on ‘Solar thermal technology for India’s sustainable energy, future energy policies and solar thermal market’. Policy makers, researchers and national and international manufacturers of solar technologies will attend the workshop. Controlling global warming to prevent dramatic changes in the world climate is a major task in order to sustain life on earth. The Copenhagen summit envisaged accelerated global dissemination of sustainable energy technologies.
The Government of India has responded to this scenario by announcing the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission with the twin objective of contributing to India’s long term energy security as well as its ecological security.
However, these require close collaboration between nations. The conference is a step in this direction to initiate dialogue between nations, especially between Germany and India.
The organisers hope that this dialogue will contribute towards the implementation of resolutions of the Copenhagen summit.

Budget 2010-2011: Pranab Mukherjee's speech

Source: http://www.moneycontrol.com

The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission envisages establishing India as a global leader in solar energy.  An ambitious target of 20,000 MW of solar power by the year 2022 has been set under the mission. I propose to increase the plan outlay for the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy by 61 per cent from Rs.620 crore in 2009-10 to Rs.1,000 crore in 2010-11.

Union Budget 2010: Power sector to attract fresh investments

Source: http://economictimes.indiatimes.com
MUMBAI: The Budget proposal to double allocation for power development would accelerate generation capacity and attract fresh investments into the
sector.

Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee raised the allocation for the sector to Rs 5,130 crore, from the previous Rs 2,130 crore. With this, the government targets to add over 78,000 megawatts of capacity by 2012.

Further, other proposals such as policy reform for fuel linkages and for lowering generation cost for thermal, would ensure timely execution of projects. Thermal project constitute 75% of energy generation.

Shortages in coal supply have already resulted in a generation loss of 10.7 billion units of power at various thermal power projects in the country during April-December 2009.

The government also has plans to allocate more captive coal mines for the power companies. NTPC, India’s largest power generator, has said it would be able to achieve its FY10 generation targets. Private players such as Tata Power, Reliance Power, JSW Energy, Essar Power, Adani Power are also expected to develop coal mine linkages for their proposed generation projects.

The tax relief on import of equipment used for solar and wind energy would also attract fresh investments into the sector. The Budget proposes to spend Rs 1,000 crore for renewable energy and a separate fund to promote clean energy.

India plans to add 20,000 MW of solar energy by 2022.

India aims at the Sun, plans big for solar energy

India is home to one of the most abundant solar resources in the world. With 2.97 million square kilometers of tropical and subtropical land and an average of 250-300 clear sunny days a year, if India uses just 2 per cent of the land area to harvest energy from sunshine, the power generated can meet the entire energy need of the country.

India has chalked out ambitious plans for solar power generation. The country plans for a double digit growth in this sector to become world’s fourth largest photovoltaic cell and module producing country by 2012. The government has set a target of about 20 MW and 50 MW for the generation of power from solar energy in the 10th (2002-2007) and 11th five year plan (2007-2012) periods. The aim is to generate 100,000 megawatts of solar power by 2030 and 200,000 megawatts by 2050, with Government funding of Rs.85,000  to Rs.105,000 crores ($18.5 billion to $22.8 billion) over a 30-year period.
