Projects Monitor :: GAIL to invest Rs 5,000 cr on LPG pipeline network:
"GAIL (India) Ltd is planning to invest Rs 5,000 crore to augment the capacity of its existing LPG pipelines and lay around 1,000 km of new pipelines across the country. Speaking to Projectmonitor, senior company officials said that GAIL was eyeing huge capital investments in pipeline infrastructure in the coming years.
At present, out of around 10.5 million tpa of bulk LPG transportation in India, 52 per cent is through road tankers, 14 per cent by rail, 4 per cent by ocean tankers and ships, and 30 per cent through pipelines. About 2,200 km of exclusive LPG pipelines have been laid so far. These pipelines have a capacity to transport over 4.0 million tpa of LPG from various refineries to the bottling plants. Out of these, GAIL owns and operates 1,900 km of pipelines of 3.6 million tpa capacity.....................
Further, it is estimated that a potential 200-250 cities could be provided with city gas distribution networks by 2020, which would translate into an investment outlay of Rs 30,000- 50,000 crore. The natural gas required to cater to these cities would be to the tune of 40-50 mmscmd, which would come through the existing and new trunk pipelines."
