Steam turbine-generator for biggest biomass power plant in the UK

Aker Solutions is a global provider of engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning services to the natural resources and energy markets. As the EPC contractor, Aker Solutions will design and build the power plant adjacent to the Tullis Russell paper mill in Scotland under contract to the RWE npower renewables, the UK subsidiary of RWE Innogy. Following the start of commercial operation scheduled for late 2012, the power plant with a capacity of 50 megawatts will provide an efficient, low-carbon supply of power and process steam to the paper mill. “The project highlights Siemens leadership in developing ecofriendly power generation solutions, as well as our field-proven high efficiency turbine technology,” said Markus Tacke, CEO of the industrial power business unit of Siemens Energy. The Siemens scope of supply for the biomass-fired power plant encompasses an SST-800 steam turbine-generator. In addition to design, engineering and production Siemens will also install the turbine-generator. “The Siemens team has shown real commitment in working with us to develop the best solution for our customer,” said Johan Cnossen, Senior Vice President EMEA – process & construction, at Aker Solutions. The biomass-fired power plant will eventually be fired with a wide range of harvested wood and wood waste totaling approximately 400,000 tons per year. Components for biomass power plants are part of Siemens’ environmental portfolio. In fiscal 2009, revenue from the portfolio totaled about EUR23 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of ecofriendly technologies. In the same period, the company’s products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 210 million tons. This amount equals the combined annual CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.
