Hayward Tyler Services cut plant operating costs

Hayward Tyler Services (HTS), part of the Hayward Tyler Group, have successfully completed a contract to overhaul three Hayward Tyler Wet Wound Boiler Circulation Pumps (BCP’s) for N.V. Elektriciteits-Produktiemaatschappij Zuid (EPZ) at their solid fuel fired power plant in The Netherlands. The contract required the overhaul to be completed on a turnkey basis in just 5 weeks.

The BCP’s were originally supplied in 1984 and have offered virtually 100% availability in over 20 years of operation. This high availability has been achieved due to a proactive preventive maintenance approach by the customer and Hayward Tyler service team.

The project involved the removal, overhaul and re-installation of three BCP’s (Model 2 x 10 x 14 x 17, 280kW, 660V, 218 Bar) in joint collaboration with EPZ’s on site maintenance team.

Not only was the project delivered ahead of schedule and under a very tight turn-around time of 5 weeks, but HTS also increased the meantime between maintenance to 4 years, therefore reducing the overall operating costs of the plant.

The project was completed under strict nuclear operating conditions, which brought with it an intense level of administration and quality requirements, familiar territory for the HTS team.

Hayward Tyler Services provide a variety of outage, repair, overhaul and test services for pumps, compressors, power turbines, gearboxes, motors and other high-speed rotating equipment from a wide variety of manufacturers and industries.

Fluid Handling shines in golden year

Hayward Tyler Fluid Handling (“HTFH”), a division of the Hayward Tyler Group, has continued to exhibit strong growth as it celebrates 50 years in business. Driven by a number of new ‘green’ energy projects the company has either won or shipped the following contracts this year:

High-Temperature/High-Pressure Canned Motor Pumps for a Dutch waste to heat power plant which generates sustainable energy from waste material. The plant originally purchased pumps from HTFH back in 2005 and these pumps, along with the new ones, are used in the power plant’s reheater systems, between the first and second stage turbines, in order to reheat the steam and improve overall plant efficiency.

High-Temperature/High-Pressure Canned Motor Pumps, for demineralised feed water duties for a new Solar Energy Power Plant in Italy. The experimental new technology uses high temperature concentrating systems or “thermodynamic systems” to concentrate solar radiation by means of large mirrors. The heat is used to raise the temperature of an auxiliary molten salt fluid, which is then used to produce steam that is subsequently fed into a traditional thermal cycle. This plant is the first application worldwide of the integration of a gas-fired combined cycle power plant and a thermodynamic solar energy system.

Remote maintenance pumps for a major nuclear waste management site in the UK. The first of these replacement units has already been shipped.

Paul Noble, Managing Director, Fluid Handling stated “Despite difficult economic conditions this year we have exceeded our targets and achieved 100% on time delivery. Further we are excited to be involved in new ‘green’ energy projects and to be able to manufacture products that help to ensure a healthier environment.”

HTFH is located in East Kilbride, Scotland, and supplies specialist agitators and canned motor pumps for industries such as chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food & dairy, beverage & breweries and both the conventional & nuclear power industry.

25th August 2009
Hayward Tyler Fluid Handling, a division of the Hayward Tyler Group, is celebrating 50 years of business in August this year. This is an important milestone for the company who today specialise in the design and manufacture of canned motor pumps.

Since its establishment in 1959 in East Kilbride, Scotland, by Jock Craig, who set up the business to manufacture ceramic lined pumps, the company has grown steadily, supplying specialist agitators and canned motor pumps for industries such as chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food & dairy and beverage & breweries. Most recently the company has been focusing on its range of canned motor pumps for the nuclear industry winning some highly prestigious contracts.

The success of the business can be attributed to a number of factors in addition to their niche-engineered products. These include the manufacturing plant capabilities, quality and environmental management systems and certification. Primarily however the success of the business is down to its people, its greatest asset. A combination of long servers and fresh faces, including new craft apprentices, give a combined service of over 250 years. To complement the team further investment has recently been made in machine tools, expansion of the offices and improved IT systems.

Paul Noble, Managing Director of Fluid Handling stated “Our golden jubilee is not just a celebration of the past but more importantly of the future. We have a fantastic heritage and this, along with our ability to design and build mission critical long life equipment, places us in a strong position to continue as a specialised engineering business for the next 50 years.”

Hayward Tyler deliver latest High Integrity Gate Valves for London Ring Main

Hayward Tyler Services, part of the Hayward Tyler Group, has successfully delivered a new High Integrity Gate Valve to Hampton Water Treatment Works in London.

During the late 1980's and early 1990's Hayward Tyler manufactured and delivered a total of 38-off 1800mm High Integrity Gate Valves to various Thames Water Utilities Ltd (TWUL) sites for the 80km long London Water Ring Main of which 31 were installed and one was stored as a spare. The ring main ensures that drinking water is maintained and distributed around London. Along the length of the main are strategically placed 'pump out' shafts and stored water shafts where water is pumped directly into the local distribution systems. It is at these shafts that the HIGV's are located within the main.

In 2006 Hayward Tyler were contacted by several contractors with regard to the possible supply of some new HIGV's for an extension to the existing ring main - Brixton Water Treatment Works to Honor Oak Reservoir and a new pump out shaft at Hampton Water Treatment Works. Hayward Tyler made the valves to the same specifications as the originals, as required by TWUL.

Hayward Tyler completed negotiations with the two successful Contractors, Black & Veatch (Hampton) and Morgan Est (Brixton/Honor Oak)for the refurbishment of the original spare valve and the supply of four new valves.

The refurbished valve was delivered to site in March 2009 with the first 'new build' valve being delivered in May 2009. The remaining valves will be dispatched in Autumn 2009.

Peter Gilman, Project Engineer, Hayward Tyler Services commented

"Working in the Hayward Tyler Heritage Product Team we are able to react quickly to customer requirements. We can supply like for like replacement equipment and spare parts for Hayward Tyler products spanning more than sixty five years. Our success in securing these contracts demonstrates our continued commitment to customers both here in the UK and worldwide.

Nuclear Build Challenges Event

According to the World Nuclear Association, at least 130 new nuclear reactors will be built by 2030. In May 2007, 30 new nuclear reactors were under construction throughout the world. The greatest amount of new capacity is being built in India and in Russia. In France, the nuclear fleet is due to be gradually renewed in the 2020s. The third generation of nuclear reactor technology is under construction at Olkiluoto and at Flamanville. Many other industrialized countries have developed a new interest in nuclear energy too. In the UK alone the nuclear industry is worth in excess of £20billion and the delivery of a new fleet of nuclear power plants in the UK by 2018 will only be a reality if the right construction choices are made.

But what does the nuclear industry require from the construction industry in order to build the next generation of nuclear build?

VIBevent’s inaugural conference “Nuclear Build Construction Challenges 2009” has been designed to address the main issues associated with the construction of the next nuclear power generation by bringing together architects/designers/engineers and key nuclear industry players on an unique platform. The programme will discuss the blue print challenges of the next generation of nuclear power plant, from the design to the construction phase.

For the first time, global construction and nuclear industry key players will be able to meet, network, debate, share best practices and discuss the lessons learnt from current and previous projects.

Hayward Tyler will be sponsoring this important event and look forward to playing a part in the future of nuclear power technology.
