The government has set aside more than Rs 30,000 crore for the upgradation and maintenance of about 115 hydro and thermal power units. Out of these a few thermal stations were commissioned as early as 1968. About 20 such units were built before 1980 and had been slated for retirement before local and state-backed lobbying efforts altered the Centre's plans for the plants which are operating with an average plant load factor (PLF) of 42.67 per cent.
During the 11th Five Year Plan, 113 units of 46,781 MW at 100 per cent PLF have already garnered portions of the Rs 30,000 investment, most of which will fall on the shoulders of the Central Government and NTPC.
A few of the old thermal and hydel units will undergo modernisation based on the performance and age of the units. The modernisation will be carried out by the utilities for which the government will provide technical and financial support for timely completion of the works.
