China has finally admitted to India that they are building a hydropower project on Brahmaputra after several years of denying the existence of any river project on the Brahmaputra.
China has confessed that they are developing a hydropower project in Zangmu, apart from this one; four more are to be developed on the Brahmaputra. But this would not involve storage of water and was a run-of-the-river project, all inside Chinese territory. The 510 MW project is being developed by Gezhouba, one of China's biggest dam-building companies.
Satellite pictures showed the construction of a dam in Zangmu, in the Lhokha prefecture of Tibet, but even in 2009, China denied the development of any project.
As of now, there are no water sharing agreements between India and China, next week, Indian and Chinese water experts finalise an implementation plan to share hydrological data on the Sutlej and Brahmaputra rivers.
