Seven natural gas-fired independent power producers (IPPs), with a combined operational capacity of 2,800 MW are teaming to add about 4,500 MW at their existing locations.
These power producers are awaiting the next round of fuel allocation by the Centre to begin with expansion works for their merchant power plants. Companies have started calling for tenders for the expansion of their power projects, Lanco Infratech and GVK are inviting for tenders for their Jegurupadu and Gauthami power plants and GMR for its Vemagiri plant.
These independent producers were awarded the mandate for the development of their projects under the international competitive bidding route in the late nineties. These companies are viewing their expansion projects as purely merchant power plants so that these producers can trade in the open market.
