Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd (KPCL) is planning to acquire a coal mine in Indonesia. The company plans to reduce its dependency on the Indian coal, which is high in ash content so it imports coal from Indonesia. KPCL requires about 7.2 million tonne per year for generating about 2,000 MW.
The Indonesian coal provides higher calorific value and less in ash content. KPCL currently mixes imported coal with the domestic coal and firing the boilers.
KPCL plans to add another 1400 MW within the next three years. In the previous year, KPCL imported around 900,000 tonne of coal from Indonesia and this year also the same quantity will be imported for firing the company’s power projects at Raichur and Bellary.
