India's Nuclear Power Corporation (NPCIL) will power its first indigenous 700MW pressurised heavy water reactor at Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP) in the state of Gujarat in 2015.
NPCIL executive director of corporate planning Sudhinder Thakur told the Press Trust Of India that about 70% of excavation at the KAPP Unit-3 site at Tapi has been completed and foundations will be laid in June.
Work on the second of the two 700MW plants in KAPP will begin after six months, according to Thakur.
The two 700MW plants are expected to be worth INR11500 crore ($2.5bn).
In December 2009, NPCIL awarded Larsen & Toubro a contract to build both Unit 3 and 4 of KAPP.
KAPP is already operating two units of 220MW plants feeding into the Western grid.
