Internet search provider Google has invested $39m in two new wind farms in North Dakota, US.
The wind farms, developed by NextEra Energy Resources, will generate enough electricity to power 55,000 homes.
Google's announcement marks the first time the company has directly invested in a large-scale renewable energy project.
The search giant had previously only invested in renewable energy through start-ups.
Google green business operations manager Rick Needham said the investment was part of the company's commitment to supporting new green technologies to push forward the development of renewable energy sources.
Needham said that large renewable energy projects like the wind farms will "accelerate the deployment of the latest clean energy technology while providing attractive returns to Google and more capital for developers to build additional projects".
