The 800 MW (4x200 MW) Koldam hydropower project being executed by the NTPC in Himachal Pradesh is expected to be completed by March 2012.
The hydropower project is located on the border of Bilaspur and Mandi districts and entails a cost of around Rs 4,527 crore. The project is being built on the pattern of a run-of-the river project on River Satluj as the silt is not allowed to accumulate and hinder the power generation process.
The project involves construction of a 163 mtrs high rock-fill dam across Satluj at slapper and surface powerhouse at the toe of the dam.
