At the end of the last fiscal, BHEL had orders worth Rs 1,43,800 crore for execution in 2010-11 and beyond.
Out of the total orders of Rs 59,031 crore last year, the power sector division contributed Rs 41,976 crore that included orders for power plant equipment amounting to 16,489 mw and an all-time high order booking for hydro equipment.
In industry, BHEL secured record orders worth Rs 14,366 crore, a growth of 40 per cent over the previous year, for a wide range of products and systems in captive power, transportation, transmission, oil and gas, renewable energy and other industrial segments.
In international business, bucking the global recessionary trend, BHEL achieved a physical export order inflow of Rs 3,571 crore in 2009-10, an increase of 9.4 per cent over the previous year.
Commenting on his company's performance in 2009-10, BHEL CMD B. Prasada Rao said, "The power sector is poised to remain in a growth trajectory even during the 12th and 13th Plan periods as the government shifts gears on infrastructure. As a part of the plan to shift to energy-saving technology and lower emissions, the share of thermal projects based on supercritical technology will rise, going forward. Robust demand in the domestic market for power plant equipment will drive intense competition where BHEL intends to retain its leadership position."
At present, BHEL has an annual capacity for 15,000 mw of power equipment which is being augmented to 20,000 mw. During fiscal 2009-10, BHEL-built power equipment generated an all-time high of 490 billion units of electricity, constituting 74 per cent of total power generated in India.
"Against the backdrop of climate change, there will be increased focus by BHEL on low carbon path technologies such as ultra supercritical, IGCC, solar power etc. BHEL will play a lead role in development and deployment of advanced ultra supercritical power plant under the proposed national mission for clean coal (carbon) technologies," Prasada Rao added.
